Within the multiple consultation rooms used by many family doctors in Prince Edward Island, Canada, patients are initially assessed by office nurses. Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs) are commonly trained to a diploma level, outside of a university, for a period of two years. Assessment criteria fluctuate significantly, spanning brief interactions for symptom presentation and vital signs, all the way to in-depth patient histories and exhaustive physical evaluations. This method of work, in spite of public anxiety surrounding healthcare expenses, has been surprisingly subjected to little to no meaningful critical assessment. Our first action was to scrutinize the effectiveness of skilled nurse assessments, analyzing diagnostic precision and the additional value they contribute.
